Note the serial number; a legitimate one follows a consistent format across genuine garments, while fakes often use random or repeated numbers.
2. Coyote fur trim, if fitted
On parkas with a fur ruff, check whether it's real coyote fur or a synthetic substitute being sold as real. Genuine fur has an uneven, varied texture at the root and individual guide hairs of different lengths. Synthetic fur used on fakes tends to be uniformly even and slightly too shiny. Sellers should always state clearly whether fur is original, replaced, or removed.
3. Zip and hardware branding
Check every zip pull, snap, and toggle. Genuine hardware is branded consistently — usually with the Canada Goose disc logo stamped into the metal, not printed on. The zips themselves should run smoothly with real heft; fakes often use lighter-weight zips that feel loose or catch.
4. The arm badge and its stitching
The circular arm badge is one of the most copied elements. Look at stitch density around its edge — genuine badges are attached with tight, even stitching in a specific thread colour. Check that the badge's internal design (the polar bear/map graphic) is sharp, not blurred or slightly off-centre, which is common on lower-quality fakes.
5. Down fill and baffle construction
Squeeze a sleeve or panel gently. Genuine down should feel evenly distributed with defined baffles (the quilted channels) that don't let down migrate into clumps. Fakes sometimes use lower-fill-power down or synthetic fill that feels flatter and less springy. Ask about fill power if it's not stated — legitimate sellers should know or be able to find out.
6. Interior labels and care tags
Genuine interior labels have crisp printing, consistent font, and are sewn in neatly. Check that the model name printed on the tag matches an actual Canada Goose model — counterfeiters occasionally invent plausible-sounding names that don't correspond to anything the brand has made.
7. Overall construction quality
Check seam finishing on the inside of the jacket. Genuine Canada Goose parkas have clean, reinforced seams at stress points (underarms, pocket openings). Loose threads, uneven stitching, or seams that pucker are signs of counterfeit production cutting corners.
